Assignment I 21

Assignment I 21

Q 1. About 1200-1500 words. Discuss your own personal “status” and “labels”—particularly gender, race, class, sexual orientation, dis/ability. How has your life been affected by your status experiences? Try to think broadly about your status labels—do not only focus on your experience of being Deaf. However, you should address how being Deaf interacts with your other status labels (e.g. being a Deaf woman, being a Black Deaf man, etc.). Do you think one or more of these statuses is more salient for you than the others? Can you recall any explicit socialization experiences (e.g., an experience where you really understood “how girls act” or “what it means to be a boy”)? Have you ever discriminated against someone else? If you could change any of these ascribed status characteristics about yourself, would you? Do you think other people feel the same way? Make sure to also consider ways in which you have been privileged, not only ways in which you have been underprivileged.

Black Deaf people have one of the world's most distinct cultures from various parts of the world. Two cultures and communities influence the Black Deaf Community the most, the Deaf and African-Americans. Being a female deaf African has been quite tough over the years, from my family hailing from the Dominican Republican to growing up in New York City, life has been tough. My family did face instances of racial discrimination over the years living in America. People feel that the world has developed and the prejudices towards the marginalized section or the minorities have reduced, but nothing seems to have changed much. Some Black Deaf people consider themselves to be part of both groups (Chapple, Bridwell, & Gray, 2021). Because both populations are seen as a minority community by the broader, primarily hearing and White culture.
